The Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) is the government body in Rwanda responsible for tax collection and customs services. Established in 1997, RRA’s main purpose is to improve Rwanda’s financial self-reliance by ensuring an efficient and fair tax collection system. The agency is responsible for collecting various types of taxes, including income tax, value-added tax (VAT), property tax, and import duties, which contribute significantly to the national budget.
RRA also manages customs services, aiming to facilitate trade while enforcing regulations and securing the country’s borders. It has worked to modernize its operations through digital systems, allowing for easier online tax filing, payment options, and compliance tracking for businesses and individuals. Through public outreach programs, RRA educates taxpayers on the importance of compliance and helps them understand Rwanda’s tax laws and regulations. Additionally, RRA has played a role in regional trade by harmonizing tax policies with those of the East African Community (EAC), promoting economic growth and cross-border cooperation.
