The Rwanda Energy Group (REG) is a government-owned company responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity across Rwanda. Established in 2014, REG oversees the country’s energy sector with a mission to ensure a reliable, accessible, and sustainable supply of electricity, supporting Rwanda’s economic development and quality of life improvements. REG operates through its two subsidiaries: Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL), which manages electricity distribution and customer service, and Energy Development Corporation Limited (EDCL), which focuses on energy generation and infrastructure development.
REG plays a critical role in Rwanda’s ambitious energy goals, including achieving universal electricity access and increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix. Rwanda relies on a combination of hydropower, solar, methane gas, and peat power plants to diversify its energy sources, with REG leading efforts to expand renewable and sustainable options. The organization has invested in significant projects, such as rural electrification initiatives, grid expansion, and off-grid solutions to increase access for remote communities.
REG also promotes energy efficiency, working with households, industries, and institutions to reduce energy waste and manage consumption better. Through partnerships with international donors and the Rwandan government, REG contributes to Rwanda’s Vision 2050 by supporting infrastructure growth, environmental conservation, and economic development through sustainable energy solutions.
